Preparation is the key to evacuation – Make leaving safely second nature

Wildfire evacuation preparation guide

Ask any firefighter and they will tell you there is no longer a fire season. Here on the mountain, we must be fire safe all year long.

The recent fires in Los Angeles are harsh reminders that one never knows when a fire will hit.

Long before fire threatens, plan your evacuation. Then, when evacuation seems likely, put your plan into action.

Create a family emergency plan including a designated meeting place should family members get separated. Have a list of emergency contacts, including out-of-town relatives.

Make a list of items for your emergency kit. Here is an example but prepare your own list:

  • Have a flashlight and portable battery-operated radio on hand at all times.
  • Prescriptions/medications
  • Eyeglasses
  • A first-aid kit
  • Important documents – birth certificates, passports, insurance papers, car titles, deed to your house, inventory list – personal financial records (tax records), computer back-up drives, photos, art
  • Jewelry
  • Cash in small denominations
  • Non-perishable food and water for at least three days
  • Items for your pets – food, leash, carrier
  • Your child’s favorite toy and blanket

Many of these things can and should be stored in a “go” box or bag that can be readily picked up and put in your car.

Make copies of all important documents and store them with a friend or family member (or in the cloud).

Keep at least half a tank of gas in your car at all times. Gas stations may not operate if power goes out.

Be aware of at least two ways out of your neighborhood and off the mountain as roads may be closed.

Be ready to go when you receive an evacuation warning. And when you receive an evacuation order, comply quickly and safely. Do not return home until told it is safe to do so.

Stay informed by signing up for an alert system like the San Bernardino County Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS). Visit the San Bernardino County Fire website (sbcfire.org) to sign up and for additional information.
