Jason Pope: The man behind the magic of Crestline’s fireworks

As the sun sets over Lake Gregory Regional Park in Crestline on July 5, 2025, at 9:00 p.m., the sky will erupt in a dazzling display of color and light, courtesy of Jason Pope, the pyrotechnician orchestrating the Jamboree Days fireworks show.

A Crestline native and licensed pyrotechnician for 20 years, Pope, who contracts with Pyro Spectaculars, brings both expertise and a personal touch to this beloved community event. In an exclusive interview, Pope shared insights into his craft, revealing the artistry, safety and passion that make the Lake Gregory show a standout spectacle.

Pope’s journey into pyrotechnics began unexpectedly through his brother-in-law, a professional pyrotechnician. “I went and did a show with him in Lincoln Park in LA… I thought, man, if he can do it, I can do it,” Pope recalled. After a two-year apprenticeship, he earned his California pyrotechnic license, a “golden license” that allows him to work nationwide due to the state’s stringent regulations. Today, he contracts with Pyro Spectaculars, one of only about six significant fireworks companies in the U.S., known for high-profile shows like the Macy’s Fourth of July spectacular in New York City.

What sets the Lake Gregory show apart is its intimate setting. Nestled in a valley surrounded by trees and the lake, the display feels “up close and personal,” amplified by the natural acoustics. “It’s like a private, intimate concert in a small bar versus a huge stadium,” Pope explained, comparing it to the Hollywood Bowl versus the Rose Bowl.

The show, lasting 13 to 15 minutes, uses 430 individual shells, with about half reserved for a breathtaking finale that leaves spectators in awe. “The finale is what everybody wants to see… it almost gets to the point where people make it a little bit scared,” Pope said, aiming for a memorable impact.

Safety is Pope’s top priority, especially in Crestline’s forested environment. The crew sets up its firing site in a compact 20-foot square, 100 feet from the control panel, which uses electronic ignition for the ultimate in control and precision. Post-show, they wait 15 minutes to inspect for fires, with a fire engine stationed nearby to mitigate risks from dry brush.

“Fire is always the biggest issue. The last thing I want to do is burn down my town,” Pope emphasized. His eight- to 10-person crew, experienced and meticulous, ensures every detail is handled with care.

Pope’s passion stems from entertaining without being in the spotlight. “I really liked entertaining people, but not being in front of them… I envision this little kid sitting on his deck watching the fireworks show and just mesmerized,” he shared. Growing up in Crestline, Pope watched the Lake Gregory show from his deck, never imagining he’d one day lead it. “When I got that show… it was an honor,” he said, noting the pressure to deliver for his hometown.

Beyond fireworks, Pope runs Eternity Helicopters with his wife, offering tours and offshore support, with safety as the cornerstone. A family man married for 27 years with two daughters, he values his roots and community.

For the best viewing spots, Pope recommends the Lake Gregory beach, which reopens for free at 6:00 p.m. so spectators can picnic before the fireworks, or near Goodwin and Sons Market, where the intimacy of the display shines.

The Jamboree Days fireworks, a highlight of Crestline’s summer festivities, owe their magic to Pope’s dedication and vision. As he prepares for another unforgettable show, his commitment to safety, artistry and community ensures that spectators will leave with memories to cherish, just as he did as a child watching from his deck.
