School’s back in session so it’s time to review the rules about driving when school buses are on the road.
In California, drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop sign extended, regardless of the direction of travel, unless on the opposite side of a divided or multi-lane highway. Drivers must remain stopped until the lights stop flashing and the stop sign is retracted.
Here are some specific rules that apply on our mountain roads:
Oncoming traffic: Drivers must stop on two-lane roads when a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign is stopped to load or unload children.
Passing a stopped school bus: A driver may only pass a stopped school bus when the red lights are no longer flashing, the stop sign is retracted or the bus begins moving again.
Cautious approach: When passing a school bus, even if legally permitted, drivers should proceed cautiously and be aware of children who may be present.
There are consequences of violations. Violating school bus stop laws can result in fines, which can be up to $1,000 in California. Violations can lead to points on your driving record and may lead to increased insurance premiums. In some cases, driving privileges could be suspended.
Motorists are urged to follow the law and keep our students safe.
