Ask the realtor: Don’t let your packages get returned to sender

Nov 27, 2025 | Ask the Realtor

As your local Realtor, I get to hear all the funny, frustrating and uniquely mountain-life stories that come with moving to Lake Arrowhead, Crestline, Running Springs and our neighboring communities.

As soon as the holiday shopping season kicks in, one story shows up more than any other – the brand-new resident who discovers their first Amazon package has been “returned to sender.” So, consider this your friendly reminder from someone who has seen it happen countless times: Before you start ordering gifts, update that address.

It usually starts innocently enough. You’ve settled into your new cabin, the last box is unpacked and you treat yourself (or your holiday guests) to a little Amazon shopping. A throw blanket, a new coffeemaker, a few presents – nothing dramatic. The tracking page cheerfully says “delivered,” so you step outside into the pine-scented air expecting to see a box waiting. Instead, there’s…nothing. No package, no note, no hint that anything ever arrived. And then the real holiday surprise shows up a few days later: “returned to sender.”

I hear it every year and I promise – it’s not you. It’s the mountain.

Down the hill, delivery trucks glide along wide, predictable routes. Up here, carriers face steep driveways, narrow roads and winter storms that can turn a simple stop into a safety hazard. When conditions get tricky, they often reroute packages to the post office instead of attempting your street. And that’s where the magic words matter: your PO box number.

On the mountain, every resident has two identities – a physical street address and a PO Box – and carriers rely on seeing both. Without that PO Box tied to your street address, the post office has no way of knowing that the package meant for 12345 North Bay Rd actually belongs to PO Box 4567. When the clerks can’t match it? Back down the mountain it goes. Right in the middle of your holiday shopping.

That’s why locals write their addresses more like this:

12345 North Bay Rd
Box 4567
Lake Arrowhead, CA 92352-4567

That ZIP+4 is your holiday season superhero. It tells the post office exactly where your redirected package belongs, even when a driver can’t make it up your driveway.

So, this is me, your local Realtor, saving you from that “Where are all my packages?!” post I see every December. Before the rush hits, jump into your online accounts and add your PO Box to your address. It’s fast, easy and it keeps your gifts from taking a surprise round-trip.

Will you still be making a few post office visits this season? Absolutely. But you’ll also meet neighbors in line, grab a warm drink in Crestline or Blue Jay and drive home with your holiday packages safely in hand. That’s just part of the charm up here.

If you’re thinking about buying in our mountain communities – or you’ve just moved in and are learning the little quirks that don’t show up in real estate listings – I’m always here to guide you through both the homes and the lifestyle, from mailboxes to mountain sunsets.
