I am beside myself. I’m crushed and so hurt. We brought home our first child, a son, just last week. My husband of two years is accusing me of being a cheat, shouting that our son can’t be his child because of his eye color. My husband and I have brown eyes. Our beautiful baby boy has blue eyes!
My husband is being unreasonable and ridiculous. He sleeps on the couch now and won’t speak to me. He has abandoned our child. He won’t go near him. For Christ’s sake, my mother-in-law has blue eyes. I feel so alone. It’s just my little guy and me. Can you help us?
Postpartum Blue in CPP
Dear Postpartum Blue,
I believe that there’s a lot more going on in your house than just the color of an infant’s eyes. You say that your husband’s mother has blue eyes. Surely, that fact alone should have calmed your husband down but, unfortunately, we have a bully on the loose in Cedarpines Park.
From my short Google search, here is some information concerning eye color in a newborn. I do hope you can get the jerk to read this.
Permanent eye color is not set until a baby is at least 9 months old. Subtle color changes may still occur until 6 years of age. Genetics control how much pigment a person will have in their body. One brown-eyed parent plus one brown-eyed parent should equal one brown-eyed baby, but that’s not necessarily every case. A baby’s eye color can also come from the grandparents’ genetics.
Of course, you can always go the paternity test route to straighten the matter out.
Being a new mother is highly stressful. You need the love and support – not to mention the two extra helping hands – of your husband at this time. My heart cries out for you, but I am not in a position to suggest that you “get the hell out of Dodge.” Reach out to your family and friends. Don’t forge ahead alone.
