The Mountain History Museum will be open this Thanksgiving weekend, Friday Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24, 25 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry to the museum is free. There is free off-street parking. It will also be open on Sunday, Dec. 3, the day after the Blue Jay holiday parade, with their annual end of the year open house.
There will be seasonal crafts inside the museum for those who are artsy to make. And in the Cozad Theater, they will be showing the animated video of Dr. Seuss’ classic story How the Grinch Stole Christmas with popcorn. While the children are enjoying the crafts, parents will have the opportunity to learn about mountain history and check out the gift store for that perfect gift for the history fan in their family. In the gift shop, there are also geodes, wooden puzzles, jewelry, photos, books, stuffed animals and toys. During both Thanksgiving weekend and the open house, items in the gift store are 20 percent off, plus there will be free cookies and lemonade for everyone.
Santa Claus will be visiting the museum from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and both Sundays. Parents are invited to being their cell phones and cameras to capture that magic Santa encounter moment. This “jolly ole soul” is looking forward to seeing the children (and adults) who visit.
Also in the museum is a display on the history of Santa’s Village which operated in Skyforest from 1955 through 1998. They have on display the Lollypop Lady’s dress, old turn-up-toe elf shoes and photos from those historic days, including the TV stars who used to visit. They have an original chair in which Santa sat to greet his little visitors. Where Santa’s Village once stood today is home to SkyPark at Santa’s Village.
The Mountain History Museum will be closed after Dec. 3 until Presidents Day weekend in February, weather permitting, so they can begin to reset the museum with new displays for the new year. Each year, the museum chooses a central topic to expand an exhibit and to add more information in other displays. Then, they plan to be open during the holiday weekends in March and April. They will reopen for weekends, beginning Memorial Day weekend in May, and continue doing that all summer long and through the end of October. They offer free group tours of the museum (schools, Scouts, churches, homeschools, business, clubs, etc.) during the months they are closed; see their website, www.mtnmuseum.org, for more details about coordinating a tour date for your group.
The museum is located at 1727176 Peninsula Drive at Rhine Road in Lake Arrowhead, around the corner from Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School.
