Am I too attached to my sweet, adopted toothless 13-pound doggie? She is 105 and I am 75 and we get along so well! We’ve been glued at the arthritic hip for six years now. I take her everywhere. She has her very own car seat, so she can stick her fluffy ears out the passenger window, and a fancy stroller so I can exercise and hold on to the handle.
This Thanksgiving a dear friend just really broke my heart. I was invited to dinner but, at the last minute, she asked me to not bring my best friend with no reason given. My little girl was all dressed up and in her harness and leash ready to go “car-car” to an adventure on Thanksgiving Day.
I knelt down and gently unhooked her harness and hung it back up. I pulled off her holiday sweater. At 3:00 I put the green bean casserole into the oven at 375 degrees. I started a fire and poured myself eggnog with rum. With her cuddled at my side, I found a fun movie to settle into.
We didn’t have turkey, but there was plenty of the Stater Bros rotisserie chicken left in the fridge. We enjoyed our feast quite alone and satisfied. Did I do the right thing?

Dear Bittersweet,
I’m trying to stop the tears so I can write this.
First off, bless you for adopting a senior toothless dog. I understand that the county kennels are full of them and that most families with children seek young dogs to bring up.
Your “dear” friend must be, to my thinking, dogless. She gave no reason for disallowing your doggie to visit on that special day of thanksgiving. Does she have cats? Has there been a problem in the past with you two visiting at her home? Was there to be a large group of people?
Between you and me and pumpkin pie, you did what was right for your pet and for yourself. I’m hoping that the eggnog and rum were all gone by the time you two hit the sheets on Thanksgiving Day.
