It was career day for the girls who participate in Every Girl Counts, the program at Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School sponsored by Soroptimist International of Rim of the World.
On March 20, five women in a variety of careers talked with the sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls about how they became interested in their fields and what it has taken to succeed in them.
Talking about their careers were:
• Heidi Wright-Tennyson, the director of golf at Lake Arrowhead Country Club
• Carmen Robinson, a nurse in the emergency department at Mountains Community Hospital
• Lisa Mills, a counselor at both Rim of the World High School and Mountain High School
• Dr. Lorann Parker, the founder of the Mountain Skies Astronomical Society
• and this reporter.

After the girls rotated through the five speakers, they were given journals by the Soroptimists. Cindy Wali told them the journals give them a “way to express yourself – what you’re feeling today.
“There are no rules for journaling,” Wali said. “This is only for you.” She added they may be feeling one way on one day but feel differently the next. “You can rip a page out. You don’t have to save every page.”
The girls decorated their journals with a variety of colorful stickers.
