The Mountain Fifes & Drums Corps helped some 50 or more members and affiliates of the Lake Gregory Yacht Club celebrate its 10th annual season grand opening on Saturday, June 1.

Commodore Steve Tilden welcomed members and interested onlookers assembled in front of the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Center on the east shore of Lake Gregory.

The senior center has graciously played host to LGYC ever since the destruction of its clubhouse on Forest Shade Road during last year’s series of epic snowstorms.

The Mountain Fifes & Drums Corps performed an extended demonstration of its precision instrumentation and musical skills.

Following Tilden’s warm and inspiring welcome, the Mountain Fifes & Drums Corps came marching through the parking lot with an extended demonstration of its precision instrumentation and musical skills. A Fifes & Drums spokesperson explained that the corps is a 501 (c) (3) youth music program founded in 2001 as a living history community service for boys and girls aged 10 to 18.

Fleet Capt. Henry Johnson rang a bell for those club members and others who have perished.

Next, came a formal Pledge of Allegiance ceremony, followed by an invocation and moment of silence and prayer where Fleet Capt. Henry Johnson rang a bell in memory of those club members and others who had perished. All veterans in attendance were then asked to stand and a formal flag retirement ceremony was performed by two fife and drum players. As the Fifes & Drums Corps returned to its staging area, a champagne toast was made by Shawn Milligan, past commodore of the Pacific Coast Yachting Association, who announced that it was time to retreat to the clubhouse for lunch.
