As the school year wound down, fifth-graders in Ms. Overmyer’s and Mrs. Waki’s classes at Charles Hoffman Elementary School got to experience being part of the American Revolution.
Walk Through the American Revolution is a program run by California Weekly Explorer. It allows schools to sign up for a presenter to come and lead the students through an interactive lesson on the American Revolution.
The students were able to actively participate in the presentation by way of rehearsed lines to portray historical figures. They also learned key terms of the time period and event.
Participating in Teams Red, White and Blue, the students reenacted battles. They received points for reciting lines, costumes and enthusiasm. They portrayed figures such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross. They reenacted the battles of Lexington and Concord, Yorktown, Trenton and Valley Forge. A presenter from California Weekly Explorer was there to keep things moving in the proper order and give the students rewards for their participation.
The Walk Through the American Revolution was an enjoyable activity for the students and provided an exciting way to learn about American history.
