The number of driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs (DUI) arrests and traffic collisions during the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) four-day maximum enforcement period (MEP) during this year’s 4th of July holiday weekend are considerably lower than the same four-day period last year.
According to CHP Public Information Officer Jacob Griede, two DUI arrests were made this year compared to six such arrests during the same period last year, which represents a 66-percent drop. Last year’s 14 collisions, compared to six this year, equates to a nearly 60-percent decline. Last year, there was only one injury reported, though it was a major injury.
As for this year’s six reported collisions, one injury was minor; however, another one was a motorcycle fatality that occurred in the Arctic Circle section of Highway 18, near Big Bear. Griede said the deceased person was a 51-year-old male from Burbank. He said the cause of the crash may have been related to speed or an unsafe maneuver and that it is under investigation.
In a safety message, Griede told the Alpine Mountaineer, “Whenever you’re behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, particularly on a mountain road, be sure to keep a safe distance behind other vehicles, avoid distractions such as your cell phone or radio, keep your eyes on the road and get to your destination safely.”
