This coming weekend at the Mountain History Museum is filled with activities for all ages. On Friday evening, Aug. 30, after a full day at the museum from noon to 4 p.m., there will be a public-invited wine and champagne reception for local authors who have written about the local area. There will be four authors honored with the reception, representing 11 books.

Ezra Murray has the most recently published book. The teen did his own research and wrote about birding in the San Bernardino Mountain area. In the book he details where and when to find various birds that inhabit the mountain areas. He will give a short talk on his inspiration for The Birds of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Architect and author Diane Wilk will be there with her book Images of America-Architecture of Lake Arrowhead in which she details the movie stars and their homes, the unique Lake Arrowhead design style and so much more about the local history of the area and its image. As an award-winning architect, she designed her own home in Hamiltair so she knows the uniqueness of the design requirements of the area.

Historian and tour guide of the area Russ Keller will be there with his books. He has five books on the mountains from Big Bear to Crestline, including his three Mountain Mileposts books of his newspaper articles and the Mountain Guide of places to see and historical locations in the mountains.

The fourth author who will be autographing books at the reception will be historian, author and museum co-founder Rhea-Frances Tetley. She has written history articles for this newspaper on the area for decades. She is the author of four books on the history of the area: Images of America- Lake Arrowhead and Lake Arrowhead Chronicles, plus her books on Crestline, Images of America- Crestline and Crestline Chronicles.

The reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mountain History Museum at 27176 Peninsula Drive at Rhine Road in Lake Arrowhead. There will be champagne and lemonade plus wine and cheese. It will be held both inside the museum and outdoors on the covered patio, weather permitting. This will be an excellent opportunity to speak with these authors to learn their inspirations and methods to writing their books.

The museum will be open, as usual, on Saturday, Aug. 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Sept. 1 during the same hours; from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. they will be serving up an ice cream social to celebrate the end of summer. Bring your family and friends and enjoy free ice cream sundaes in the air-conditioned museum and learn a little more about the background of your community. Most communities have a special display in the museum talking about their background and what makes that community special.

A special new display on the how the San Bernardino Mountains were affected by WWII is just being developed and now is on display. Come see the story of one mountain resident’s military experience and also see a purple heart medal, ration stamps, read about the military air crashes in the area, the Navel Hospital at Arrowhead Springs, the RnR in the Lake Arrowhead area and about how Crestline was used for base housing for the San Bernardino Air Base (now San Bernardino International Airport). The museum is still adding to this display, so if you have military items you would want to loan or have on display at the museum relating to WWII let them know at (909) 744-8625. They are seeking a WAC’s uniform to sit alongside the Army uniform they are displaying. See their website for upcoming events and other information: https://www.mtnmuseum.org.
