National Nutrition Month, celebrated each March, is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The month encourages everyone to make informed food choices, develop healthier eating habits, and engage in physical activity. Mountains Community Hospital’s Nutritional Services Department embraces this opportunity to nourish patients, staff, and residents, promoting healthier lifestyles. Our Nutritional Services Manager and Registered Dietitian, Delacey Foster, shares some practical tips to help you eat better and adopt habits that can improve overall well-being.

  1. Eat a Variety of Foods
Incorporating a variety of foods is essential for a balanced diet. Include a mix of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. This variety ensures that you’re getting a wide range of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, all of which support bodily functions and long-term health.
  2. Practice Portion Control
Mindful portion control can help prevent overeating, even with healthy foods. Try using smaller plates and bowls to naturally reduce portion sizes. Listen to your body’s hunger cues, and aim to stop eating when you’re satisfied, not full. Paying attention to serving sizes helps you maintain a healthy weight and avoid excessive calorie intake.
  3. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water is essential to maintaining hydration. Water supports digestion, regulates body temperature, and keeps energy levels up. Aim for at least eight cups of water per day, and consider drinking more if you’re physically active. Avoid sugary drinks like soda, and opt for water or herbal teas to stay hydrated without added sugar or calories.
  4. Limit Added Sugars and Sodium
Processed foods can be high in added sugars and sodium, which can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, and other health issues. Reduce your consumption of sugary snacks, processed foods, and items with excessive salt. Instead, choose fresh, whole foods and season them with herbs and spices to add flavor without extra sodium.
  5. Plan Your Meals
Planning your meals ahead of time can help you make healthier choices and prevent the temptation of fast food. Meal planning ensures that you have balanced, nutritious options available throughout the week, making it easier to stick to your health goals. Preparing meals in advance can also save time and money.
  6. Cook at Home
Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients and cooking methods used in your meals. It’s often more affordable than eating out, and it gives you the flexibility to experiment with healthier recipes. Preparing food at home can also help you avoid the high sugar, fat, and sodium content often found in restaurant dishes.
  7. Snack Wisely
Healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables with hummus, or a handful of nuts can keep you satisfied between meals. Opt for snacks that are high in protein and fiber to maintain energy levels and curb hunger without reaching for processed, sugary snacks.
  8. Move Your Body
Regular physical activity complements healthy eating. Exercise boosts metabolism, helps with weight management, and improves mood. Incorporating movement into your routine doesn’t have to be strenuous—daily walks or stretches can make a big difference.
  9. Limit Alcohol Consumption
While moderate alcohol consumption can be part of a healthy lifestyle, it’s essential to be mindful of the calories and effects it can have on overall health. Drinking in moderation, paired with healthy eating habits, can support long-term wellness.
  10. Be Mindful of What You Eat
Mindful eating encourages you to slow down and savor your food. Eating without distractions allows you to listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, helping prevent overeating and fostering a better relationship with food.
