Ask the realtor — A dream lost – and found again

Theresa Grant, Realtor Advice Column.

Every Thursday, real estate agents across our mountain communities participate in what’s called a broker tour. It’s a time when agents open their listings exclusively for other agents to preview – an opportunity to explore homes, exchange insights and connect with our peers.

At a recent tour, I ran into fellow agent Steve Valentine. As we chatted about market conditions and client experiences, Steve shared a story that stuck with me long after I left.

He had just closed a transaction for a buyer who had fallen in love with a particular home and was determined to make it hers. The buyer submitted a strong offer, negotiated hard and eventually opened escrow. But it wasn’t until closing that she shared something deeply personal: she had owned that very same house nearly a decade ago. Selling it had always been her biggest regret.

When the home came back on the market, she knew she had to try to get it back. But she kept that to herself, worried that saying it out loud might jinx the outcome.

That moment struck a chord with me. Real estate isn’t just about square footage and lot size. It’s about people. Memories. Second chances. Skilled, full-time agents bring more than paperwork and lockboxes – we bring empathy, strategy and intuition. Often, we’re helping clients through big life transitions, whether or not they share all the details with us.

Every buyer and seller has a story – their “why.” And when we’re invited into that narrative, it’s not just a transaction; it’s a privilege. It reminds us that helping people find home is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.

What stood out even more was that Steve and I work for different brokerages, but we were able to connect and reflect on this moment as colleagues. When agents can communicate openly and respectfully across company lines, everyone wins – especially the clients.

This business is built on relationships. Between people and properties. Between agents and clients. Between professionals who care enough to support one another and share stories that matter.

I’m grateful to work among agents who bring that level of care to their practice, no matter what company name is on the sign. Stories like Steve’s are reminders that what we do matters, often in ways we can’t immediately see.

So, the next time someone tells me they’re afraid to dream big – or to dream again – I’ll remember that client who found her way back to a place she never stopped loving. And I’ll be reminded that we’re not just helping people buy and sell houses – we’re helping them come home.
