Over the course of the month of September, volunteers have undertaken a statewide effort to clean up and preserve the California coastline, mountains, waterways and communities. Part of this effort – the California Coastal Cleanup-Fall Litter Event – is the Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program.
In 1989, California became the 20th state to develop a highway litter control program when Caltrans began administering the AAH program for state highways. Highway 18, Rim of the World Scenic Byway, is one of the highways whose miles have been adopted by many organizations.
More than 20 years ago, the Save Our Forest Association adopted the section of Highway 18 from Lake Gregory Drive east to Rimforest.
The AAH program is one of the most successful government-public partnerships, fostering community involvement in maintaining California’s highways. Permits are issued for five-year periods and groups in good standing may renew their permits indefinitely.
Anyone interested in joining SOFA’s quarterly clean-ups should visit saveourforestassoc.org. The next scheduled Adopt-A-Highway cleanup is Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, meeting at the Red Rock Wall turnout, one mile east of the Lake Gregory stoplight on Highway 18.
