A game in the rain and a sunrise with seniors

Foggy football game with players barely visible

Is the scoreboard off? Or is the fog just too thick? Nobody could really tell on the evening of Friday, Sept. 1, when the Rim of the World High School varsity football team kicked off their second home game against the Estancia Eagles.

With a thick layer of fog obscuring the field, audiences could hear the players’ chants echoing through the rain. The Rim varsity football team gave it their all during the torrential downpour, with the audience in the bleachers cheering loudly beneath umbrellas and canopies. Many people from the community came to support the players as they persevered through the rainy weather, with temperatures hovering at around a chilly 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

The game ended with a score of 16-9 as the Scots took home another win. Coach Jurado, a veteran football coach at Rim, has coached football for 24 years and is a Rim graduate. In an interview with him, he stated that the team lost a lot of returners from last year’s team as 17 seniors had graduated.

“We’ve got a pretty young tough team, a lot of talent,” Coach Jurado said, “so we’ll see how they respond.”

This year, the varsity football team’s new team captains are 12th graders Drew Tomasello and Cole Paxton. Drew said that he feels ready for the upcoming season, and that he plans on continuing football in college. The next home football game at Rim High School will be on Thursday, Oct. 5, against Grand Terrace. Spectators can buy their tickets on the Go Fan website, with adult tickets priced at $9 and student tickets costing $4. Go Scots!

Senior Sunrise

Seniors gathered in the annual sunrise tradition on Sept. 1.

Seniors gathered in the annual sunrise tradition on Sept. 1.On the same day, Sept. 1, Rim High School students woke up at the crack of dawn to participate in Senior Sunrise, a tradition at the high school where seniors gather on the front lawn of the school to watch the sunrise. Students brought blankets and chairs to sit on as they sipped on free hot cocoa and ate donuts provided by the school.

Ms. Cobb, a photography teacher at Rim High School, said that she has been teaching at Rim High for 15 years, and that this is her 11th year of managing senior events at Rim. She feels events like Senior Sunrise are so special because “it’s the last time you’re going to be with your friends, six hours a day, five days a week. So, take advantage of it. Yes, you had to wake up early today, but what an experience! How cool is it to watch the sunrise with 200 of the people that you grew up with, your closest friends. It’s a magical thing.”

Ms. Cobb always encourages students to attend events like prom and Homecoming because it’s one of the last chances for students to make memories with their fellow classmates. Unlike many other school districts, nearly all students in the Rim of the World Unified School District end up going to the same high school. As such, each graduating class shares close bonds with their classmates, some of whom have known each other since kindergarten.

In an interview with seniors Jason (Ben) Bill and Nikolai Carbaugh, they said that they are enjoying Senior Sunrise with the people that they grew up with, and that they are looking forward to the football games and the prom at the end of the year.  Senior year is a special time and Senior Sunrise is just the beginning of this incredible journey into adulthood.

Club Rush

To top off all this excitement, Club Rush will be on Sept. 15 this year. Club Rush is a lunch time carnival at Rim High School where clubs and sports recruit new members and often raise money by setting up fun games for students to play.

On Wednesday, Aug. 30, presidents and captains from various clubs and sports teams participated in a lunchtime meeting at the school to plan for Club Rush. This event brings together students from all grade levels at the high school and is a great way for students to get to know new people and join new clubs and teams.

With a variety of different clubs and sports to choose from, students are bound to find something they are interested in. Stay tuned!

Diane Zhang, a senior at Rim of the World High School, will be reporting on high school events this year for the Alpine Mountaineer. Welcome, Diane!

The seniors tried to meet at the Lake Gregory Yacht Club but their building had collapsed six months ago. They could only handle the smell there for a few minutes so they retreated to their yachts. So it looks like the neighborhood will endure the winter with the smell but no more yacht club.

It was confirmed by an unnamed MTS person that there is no immediate plan to cleanup the collapsed yacht club. So Crestline you need to live with the smell, broken water line and transients. What a tribute to the former Lake Gregory Yacht Club. What an embarrassment!

Mr Chisler thank you for your posted update of the collapsed yacht club. We live nearby and the smell is getting worse. They have had water running out of that building for months. We are complained to the County and current members of the yacht club with no response. I know we are supposed to respect the elderly but please. Doing nothing over 7 months is a slap in the face to residents that live there.

I just checked again and the water is actively running out of the collapsed yacht house into the street. According to the people directly next door it has been running since the building collapsed in March. Shame on you Lake Gregory Yacht Club for turning out street into a small swamp.

Talking to the MTS the new owners of the collapsed yacht club property there is no urgency to cleanup. The smell is so foul now residents should fear getting sick. The greedy yacht club appears to never intend to cleanup their mess. How can they with a straight face go back to their yachts. On September 21st they are planning a Lake Gregory cleanup but please face up to your responsibility for your collapsed building. Their hypocrisy is hilarious but after seven months we have come to expect this from this community minded club.

          • Michelle

You are spot on Mr Chisler that we should gather around Lake Gregory October 21st to help with the cleanup but also to explain to the yacht club members how fed up we are. Maybe the members need to be reminded of their responsibility to cleanup their mess. And yes water is still running out of their building into the street.

        • Richard Chisler

Michelle do you know not only did the four yacht club property owners refuse to cleanup their uninsured collapsed building but walked away with a tidy $175,000. Not a bad recovery except the community is left with a their storm disaster.

Are you kidding: you mean the yacht club pocketed $175,000 and was able to leave us their collapsed building? What a joke! The County dropped the ball in this one.

There is a moldy foul smell coming from the collapsed yacht club. Over time the odor is becoming so bad we now need to keep our windows closed. The greedy yacht club has made this neighborhood unliveable. They got a bag full of cash and we got sick. Trick or Treat

          • Richard Chisler

Correction: the Lake Gregory Yacht Club lake cleanup is October 21st. Go out there and help these yacht owners cleanup the Lake and ask if they feel good about the disaster they left the community.

          • Richard Chisler

Plan on meeting Saturday October 21st outside of Tonis Mexican Restaurant bottom parking lot prepared to participate in the Lake Gregory cleanup. That will be our best opportunity to explain to the yacht club members our frustration of their lack of concern of their collapsed building. Do not be quiet but be prepared to advocate for our families. It is time for them to take responsibility.

          • maggie

We will meet you Mr Chisler on the 21st. I have a van full of neighbors ready to help with the cleanup and give the yacht club an ear full.

          • Richard Chisler

We are planning to go door to door in the neighborhood to organize residents to meet on the 21st. We need a large turnout to get the attention of the yacht club and yes help with the Lake area cleanup. This may be our best chance to voice our concerns. Please be heard and bring your neighbors and let’s make a difference.

      • Mary

Mr Chisler it was so nice to meet you and all the little Chislers. You are an inspiration to all of us. I did not see anyone from the old Yacht Club. Their collapsed sticking eye site of a building still is not cleanup but proudly hails the former Lake Gregory Yacht Club sign and logo. Mr Chisler enjoy the upcoming holidays and thank you for organizing the cleanup.

You would think a blighted eye sore, trash, debris, graffiti, a smell that makes you vomit and homeless hanging out below the collapsed roof would be resolved since early March but not here in Crestline. We have made numerous complaints to the County but no action. You would think a Lake Gregory Yacht Club weathered sign would embarrass these yacht owners but no. They need to take responsibility for this and October 21st is our chance. Meet me and everyone that cares about our neighborhood at Toni’s bottom lot so we can voice our frustration. This blighted eye sore would not have been allowed to stand down the hill. The yacht club is an embarrassment and should be called out. Also our group will be prepared to cleanup the Lake in the 21st because we care about Crestline. Many of us have lived here our whole life. See you all on the 21st and show them we care.

It looks like the yacht club will need more donuts and coffee on the 21st because I am getting an amazing response for the cleanup and calling out the yacht people. People are fed up and will not be quiet any longer. Bring trash bags and gloves and get ready to finally get some accountability from these folks.

Mr Chisler thanks again for coordinating the 21st event. Being the best chance to meet the yacht club members we have assembled a small army. Besides our Lake cleanup we will post signs and pass out flyers voicing our displeasure of the yacht club.

I will be there on the 21st because I like others am fed up with the yacht club collapsed building. The yacht has to be held responsible for their carelessness. Who does not carry property insurance in the mountains? I was told the founder was an insurance executive. Are you kidding me? Well now it is time to pay the piper and we will collect on the 21st. Shame on you Yacht Club-take your toys somewhere else.

I almost forgot to thank Richard Chisler for all the effort in organizing the October 21st Lake Gregory Cleanup. We will not let you down Richard. No doubt the yacht club will need to step up then to avoid being labeled as a community paria.

Michelle: thank you and looking forward to the 21st for the cleanup. I hope the yacht club members actually have the nerve to show so we can try for a resolution. They will be surprised how many locals they have affected. See you all at 10:00 in the 21st.

Does anyone expect the yacht club members to be there on the 21st for their cleanup? They have avoided every opportunity to do the right thing since March. Either way we will be there with signs and flyers and embarrass those folks to cleanup their mess. We have two trucks and cleaning tools that should work around the Lake. Mr Chisler if this does not work then we go to Plan B.

Maggie: I have at least 20 volunteers for the 21st cleanup, pickup trucks and tools confirmed. We will show those yacht owners what it means to care about the community. The yacht club building stinks worse everyday. Maybe when we are done on the 21st those old goats can have a cocktail next to their collapsed building and know what the term “hot boxed” means. They need to be called out for what they did to our mountains

          • Maggie

That you Richard Chisler for putting together the Lake Gregory community cleanup. The mountain owes you a big Thank You for organizing the October 21st event. Also you were our leader in holding that yacht club to the fire. See you allSaturday the 21st at Toni’s bottom level lot.

  4. Richard Chisler

Rick Chisler here: I would like to thank everybody who showed up to help with our Lake Gregory cleanup. From the Chisler family a big thank you. Did anybody see any members of the former Lake Gregory Yacht Club there? They must have been taking on their yachts.

Just a note: I was just told that there are no yachts, boats but just toy inflatables. No wonder they can not afford to cleanup their collapsed building. They have no money just an empty name and hot air.
