Even with rains pounding away from recent atmospheric rivers, the rebuilding of Goodwin’s Market has been steady, and now early May is being targeted for a reopening of Crestline’s supermarket.
“It has been hard for the crews, working in the rain and cold, but I’d rather have that than snow,” said Mike Johnstone, VP and general manager for Goodwin’s Market.

The framing for the new dining area at the front of the market has been installed.
Much progress has been made since March 1, 2023, when the roof of the 43,000-square foot Goodwin & Sons’ Market, Crestline’s only full-service grocery, began to cave in toward the back storage room under the weight of several feet of snow. The roof, and everything inside the store, was a total loss.
The new roof only needs the final top to be installed and crews can now work inside, which is dry.
“Most of the overhead utilities are in now, and we’ve started polishing the concrete floors,” Johnstone told the Alpine Mountaineer. “The big walk-in coolers are getting delivered, and all the lighting is being installed today,” he said on Tuesday of last week. All of the interior drywall was installed last week and also the main heating and air conditioning unit and ductwork.
Work on Goodwin’s bakery and deli service area is on track and is expected to open in early May when the market reopens for business.
“All the guys are really plugging away,” Johnstone said. “And we are still optimistic for an early May opening.”
