Dear Sidney – 03/07/2024

Mar 6, 2024 | Dear Sidney

I’ve foolishly fallen in love with a sweet, lovely girl, a girl of a different race. I met her at my favorite restaurant. I love their Kung Pao chicken and came back for more and more.

I spend my working hours longing to be with her and when I’m with her it feels like we are all alone on an island. She loves me, too, and, naturally, wants marriage and children. However, my gut tells me that I just can’t get over her nationality, her culture and her foreign ways.

I fear that if we marry and have children, my parents will not jump at the chance to be grandparents and will have nothing to do with us. It’s a gut thing. I have not yet introduced her to my family. It’s all just putting a big knot in my stomach. What’s wrong with me?

Reading your column each week, I feel that you’re a very wise old bird. Do you have any advice for me?

Lt. Cable in Agua Fria

Dear Lt. Cable,

You weren’t born with this fear and hate. You were carefully taught. By the time you were 6 or 7, your parents, relatives and others in your sphere of influence encouraged your distaste for others not of your kind.

I don’t want you lamenting that “once paradise nearly was mine.” You can break out of this malignant cancer of prejudice. Are you a man or a mouse?

If you’re not man enough to make her your wife, then stop being intimate with this lovely young lady. Stop being a cad, Lieutenant.

Good luck and don’t forget to invite me to the wedding. I hear the Lake Gregory Company has a nice venue on the lake at the San Moritz Lodge.

Dear Sidney, I’ve been up and down this mountain since Grandpa bought a vacation cabin in Crestline circa 1954. From 39th and Arrowhead in San Bernardino, we’d all pile into the red and white boat of a Buick and head up the mountain from 40th Street. Not long of a...

Dear Sidney, I am a single mother of a young lady that I’m so proud of and love so very much. She’s 25 now and has been on her own since she was 18. I’ve never been wealthy and there’s been no father around to fill in the gaps along the way. Very little money has been...
