When the going gets tough, mountain residents show up. On Oct. 12, locals from Running Springs, Arrowbear and Green Valley Lake gathered at Havenwood to honor the heroes who saved Running Springs and neighboring communities from the devastating Line Fire.
The Welcome Home celebration also raised donation funds for the Palenchar family, who tragically lost their home to the fire on Sept. 10. Signs of gratitude were posted throughout the event for all to see, with messages like, “Thank You to Our Heroes” and “Thank You For Saving Running Springs” on every corner.

“This event was about collectively letting out a sigh of relief while recognizing the helpers and using the gathering to further support the family who lost so much,” said Becky Morgan, Havenwood’s owner, who worked with other locals to organize this incredible gathering of unity and healing.
The celebration recognized local heroes, including first responders and residents who contributed during the fire. The event featured live music by local musicians, food from Neo’s Pizza and Rocky’s Deli, a beer and wine bar, along with family-friendly activities like a raffle, face painting, a bounce house and even a spooky maze to explore.

In addition to the day’s activities, pre-loved books were sold at Jeremy Collins’ art studio and children received welcome-home gift bags, adding warmth and fun to the community’s efforts. The pumpkin patch and other kid-friendly entertainment brought smiles to all ages, while adults took the opportunity to reflect on the recent events and offer ongoing support.
Proceeds from the bar and donations were directed to the Palenchar family, who now face the monumental task of rebuilding not only their home, but their lives. The fire has left deep scars. However, the community continues to prove its resilience by coming together to lend much-needed support and, most importantly, a breath of fresh air after a momentous disaster threatened so many communities and businesses.
While the live event was a critical fundraiser, donations continue through the GoFundMe campaign established for the Palenchar family by Finn Haskins. Running Springs, Arrowbear and Green Valley Lake’s united efforts demonstrate that Mountain Strong is more than just a motto – it’s a reflection of the community’s enduring strength and compassion for one another.
