Whether you are an adult or a child, if you have always wanted to learn to play chess, now is your chance.
The Rim of the World Recreation and Park District is offering chess classes at the Hootman Community Center in Running Springs.
Chess I is for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. In this introductory class, they will learn the basic rules, how pieces move and some essential strategies.
Chess II is for students who have completed Chess I or who already know the basics.
Adult Chess I is a beginning class for adults.
All classes take place on Wednesdays with Chess I from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Chess II from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Adult Chess I from 5 to 6 p.m.
Classes began on Dec. 11 and will continue to May 21, 2025. Cost is $10 per participant per month. The instructor, Daniel Satorius, will provide all materials and equipment.
Satorius, who grew up in Long Beach, learned to play chess while in college. “I found the 1,500-year-old game fascinating and studied it for a few years,” he said. He added he particularly enjoys the creative component of chess.
“I think chess is a great supplement to a child’s education through its development of critical thinking, problem solving and creative thinking. These are transferable skills children can use throughout their education and career.”
