The meaning of home: Reflections and wishes for 2025

One of my earliest memories of “home” is walking into my grandparents’ house in Redlands, in the early 1970s. There was a special plaque on the wall, which etched itself so deeply into my heart that it has stayed with me my entire life. There was always some kind of treat – usually my Nana’s cookies – and the house overflowed with music and warmth.

My grandparents were musicians and entertainers, widely sought after in the Hollywood entertainment industry. They were originally from the “Old Country,” where everyone was welcome, and friends were family. If there was a knock at the door or the doorbell rang, it became a race to see who could throw open the door first to greet the visitor. Even the postman was treated like a member of the family, with a warm hello as he walked up the steps to drop mail into the slot.

Now, as 2024 winds down and 2025 approaches, I find myself reflecting on how the concept of “home” has evolved over the decades. From cozy bungalows to modern apartments, sprawling estates to minimalist tiny homes, “home” has come to mean something unique for everyone. Despite these shifts, one constant remains: We all long for a place to call our own, whether it’s a cottage in the mountains, a city loft or even an RV parked by the beach.

In my 30-year career as a Realtor, I’ve had the privilege of helping countless individuals and families find that special place where their lives unfold. Sometimes, a move is prompted by excitement – a growing family, a new job or a dream come true. Other times, it’s bittersweet, necessitated by change, loss or the closing of one chapter to begin another. No matter the reason, my goal is always the same: To make each transaction smoother, happier and, when needed, a little softer for my clients.

To me, being a Realtor is more than selling properties – it’s about helping people find their next “home.” It takes empathy and compassion to guide someone through the emotional complexities of moving, paired with sharp market knowledge and expert negotiation skills to handle the business side. Bringing these elements together is like weaving a tapestry: intricate, nuanced and rewarding.

As we prepare to welcome 2025, I think back to the plaque in my grandparents’ home. Its words resonate as much today as they did decades ago:

Wherever you wander
Wherever you roam
Be happy
Be healthy
And glad to come home.

Thank you for letting me share this journey with you. Wishing you joy and prosperity in the year ahead. See you in 2025!
