Learning to set up a shelter

The recent Line Fire serves as a reminder to mountain residents and visitors that we can be subject to evacuation due to a wildfire.

Sometimes, as in the case of the Line Fire, the evacuation order applies to just certain mountain communities. In that case, folks may choose to stay on the mountain at a shelter that has been set up.

To help with that process, the Red Cross will be holding a shelter simulation training on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Charles Hoffman Elementary School (2851 Running Springs School Road).

The shelter simulation provides practical experience on how to conduct the various tasks required to maintain a shelter.

Three goals have been outlined for the simulation training, to provide the participants with a successful and productive learning experience:

  • Promote teamwork through interactive group activities that correspond to operating a shelter.
  • Reinforce key activities and tasks involved in resourcing, opening, operating and closing a shelter.
  • Provide participants with an opportunity to practice skills and discuss ways to handle issues that arise in shelters.

Those who are interested in participating are asked to sign up by sending an email to Erin Fox at erin.fox@redcross.org.
