The recent Line Fire serves as a reminder to mountain residents and visitors that we can be subject to evacuation due to a wildfire.
Sometimes, as in the case of the Line Fire, the evacuation order applies to just certain mountain communities. In that case, folks may choose to stay on the mountain at a shelter that has been set up.
To help with that process, the Red Cross will be holding a shelter simulation training on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Charles Hoffman Elementary School (2851 Running Springs School Road).
The shelter simulation provides practical experience on how to conduct the various tasks required to maintain a shelter.
Three goals have been outlined for the simulation training, to provide the participants with a successful and productive learning experience:
- Promote teamwork through interactive group activities that correspond to operating a shelter.
- Reinforce key activities and tasks involved in resourcing, opening, operating and closing a shelter.
- Provide participants with an opportunity to practice skills and discuss ways to handle issues that arise in shelters.
