Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott — The Long and Winding Road

Hello, it’s me – Sorry I missed you guys last week, it’s all my fault and I’m sorry if I ruffled your tailfeathers, but I’m back in circulation now.

Hello, it’s me, I’ve thought about us for a long, long time. Maybe I think too much, but something’s wrong. There’s something here that doesn’t last too long, maybe I shouldn’t think of you as mine. (“Hello It’s Me” – Todd Rundgren – 1972)

Many kudos go out this week to Caltrans for finally repaving Highway 138, all the way from Top Town Crestline and down to Valley of Enchantment and Silverwood Lake. I must say I was rather perturbed the last few months at having to wait for five or 10 minutes for the traffic to be flagged past me so I could proceed past the flaggers to my final destination. But not as perturbed as I was every time I had to dodge any of the dozens of cavernous potholes to prevent bending my rims or breaking an axle on the mighty Mottmobile, like dozens of other brave but unfortunate motorists have done over the past few years since the sinkholes popped up (actually, they popped downward).

These rather dangerous potholes and annoying flaggers could, of course, have been avoided in the first place by utilizing an alternate route such as Brookside or Knapps Cuttoff. Anyway, it’s no longer a problem, now that we have a Big, Beautiful paved and re-stripped highway to traverse where ‘ere we go along the long and winding road betwixt Crestline proper and Valley of Enchantment. And it didn’t require an act of Congress to get the job done.

The long and winding road that leads to your door will never disappear, I’ve seen that road before, it always leads me here, lead me to your door. (“The Long and Winding Road” – from The Beatles 1970 “Let it Be” album)

Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
