Labor Day weekend at the Mountain History Museum is filled with activities. The museum, located at 27176 Peninsula Drive at Rhine Road around the corner from Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School in Lake Arrowhead, offers displays of local history with a focus on the local communities and events that changed the area’s history.  The events include meeting authors, an ice cream social and the showing of two different movies in the Cozad Theater.

On Friday, Aug. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. is the museum’s second annual Labor Day weekend “Meet the Authors” champagne reception. This year the museum is welcoming five authors. In various spots around the museum each author will have a table. If you have one of these author’s books you want autographed, bring it with you.

In the front room, near the National Forest display, by Forest Ranger Brad Burns, will be author and former forest ranger Bruce Risher who wrote the history book, The San Bernardino National Forest-the First 100 Years. He also has co-written with John W. Robinson several other well-researched books.

Architect Diane Wilk will be at the museum signing her book, Images of America-Lake Arrowhead Architecture, which explores the unique and famous architects and homes of some of the famous people who have lived in the Lake Arrowhead area. She will be in the Lee Cozad Theater room, next to the Lake Arrowhead map of homes of the stars.

Historian Russ Keller, who has been giving many history talks this summer, will be there with his six books, including the three “Mountain Milestone” books, and “Postcards of Lake Arrowhead” and several books he has co-authored including the “Mountain Guide.” He will be in the front room next to the Lake Arrowhead Dam diorama, and have several rare, out-of-print, autographed local history books as well on his table.

Alicia Baca Rush wrote a wonderful life experience book on The Good Kind of Cancer and her experiences that she has overcome while living in the mountains. This is a unique opportunity to meet this life survivor.

A brand-new book, The San Bernadino Mountains Travel Guide, will have its author Irene Wickstrum showing off her new publication. This is an excellent guide to the area, of what to seek out and see, with descriptions of the area.

Rim of the World Historical Society past president and co-founder Rhea-Frances Tetley will be in the back room with her four books, two on Lake Arrowhead and two on Crestline, sitting in front of the Animals of the Mountains display.

They are still coordinating possible other authors who may be in attendance. The reception is a great time to visit the museum, check out the displays and honor these authors, right after the museum closes at 4 p.m. on Friday.

On Saturday Aug. 30 at both 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. will be the free showing in the Cozad Theater of the Huell Howser California Gold episode of “Under Lake Arrowhead” where Huell goes into the tunnel under the lake, and meets many local personalities, including historians, authors and teachers.

On Sunday, Aug. 31 will be the end-of-the-season ice cream social from noon to 3 p.m. in the patio area at the museum. Ice cream will be served, as a thank you for all the visitors who have visited the museum this summer.

Last winter the museum volunteers discovered the front windows of the museum were broken and it took several months to get them replaced, which required the removal of all the front interior displays and then their replacement. Just two weeks ago the final step in the window replacement was the installation of the new vinyl six-foot-tall photos on the windows.

On Labor Day Monday, the museum will be showing the debut role of Raquel Welch in the movie, A Swinging Summer at 1 p.m. The movie was filmed completely in the Old Village at Lake Arrowhead. This campy movie had music from famous bands of the era, including the Righteous Brothers, the Rip Cords, Gary Lewis and the Playboys.

There is free entry to the air-conditioned museum as well as free parking. For more information call (909) 744-8625 or see their website, www.mtnmuseum.org.
