Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Popsicle Toes

Sep 17, 2025 | Uncle Mott

Person standing under Mottsville sign outdoors.

That was quite a cold snap we had in these parts last week. Why, it was cold enough to freeze the ears off of a brass monkey. By the way, back in the day a brass monkey was a rack that held cannon balls on the deck of a seafaring ship. When it got really cold, those metallic cannon balls, along with the monkey’s ears, would expand in size and fall right off the rack.

If you were to stand too close to that rack they could fall right onto your toes, which reminds me that I fell on my nose recently and bent it all out of shape. Don’t worry, it’s getting better now. I bet you didn’t know that noses run in my family…sniff, sniff.

Popsicle toes are always froze. Popsicle toes you’re so brave to expose those popsicle toes. We oughta have a birthday party, and you can wear your birthday clothes. We can hit the floor and go explore those Popsicle toes. (“Popsicle Toes” – Michael Franks – 1976)

With any luck, now that autumn is approaching, it should be warming up soon and, before you know it, it will be hotter than the witch’s proverbial broomstick. Hopefully, my popsicle toes will thaw out. But just as I was telling my lovely wife the other day…

You’ve got the nicest North America this sailor ever saw. I’d like to feel your warm Brazil and touch your Panama, but your Tierra del Fuegos are nearly always froze, you’re so brave to expose all those popsicle toes.” (Michael Franks)

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: What’s New Pussycat

Early this morning, Albert the Kat (He’s the good cat) was being chased, back-and-forth, across my bed at 3 a.m. by Cousin Rusty the Kat, the latest addition to the Katz family, yet another orange and white cat that thinks it should be treated like royalty. To tell...

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Our House

Well, we finally got through the summer heat spell without the horrible wildfires that often ravage the mountaintop communities this time of the year. Now it’s time to relax and enjoy what there is showing on the so-called “idiot box.” There are several TV shows that...
