Well known actress and local supporter June Lockhart, perhaps best known for her role as Timmy’s mother in the classic television series Lassie (1954-1973), passed away peacefully, of natural causes, at her home in Santa Monica on Thursday, October 23, a family spokesperson confirmed to CBS News. She is survived by her children Anne Lockhart and Lizabeth Lockhart.

Born in New York City on June 25, 1925, the daughter of actors Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, she made her professional debut at age eight. June was also widely known for her portrayal of Dr. Janet Craig on the CBS television series Lost in Space (1965-68) and the network’s short-lived television sitcom Petticoat Junction (1968-70). Lockhart began her film career in the 1930s and 40s in films such as A Christmas Carol and Meet Me in St. Louis.

June Lockhart reportedly had a strong connection to Lake Arrowhead, where she was a prominent figure at the Lake Arrowhead Film Festival. She was also a co-founder, along with Mac McKenzie in 1947, of the still active Lake Arrowhead Water Ski Club. Those who knew her recall Lockhart as a major supporter and enthusiastic hostess of the annual film festival.

Longtime acquaintance Mary Dippell told the Alpine Mountaineer, “I met June in 2006, 20 years ago, and we became fast friends when she joined the Board of the Lake Arrowhead Film Festival. She would sit in the Resort lobby and regale stories from her youth about her adventures when she spent her summers on Lake Arrowhead. She loved this town so much and shared so many memories from her years spent here. She became such a special part of my life, and her energy and spirit captured the hearts of everyone who met her. I was hoping this day would never come because the world just got a little dimmer without her in it. RIP and Godspeed, my beloved June. I will always love you.”
