Help count those who are unhoused

Jan 8, 2026 | Mountain Events

The Point-in-Time Count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. The 2026 Point-In-Time Count will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 22.

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of people experiencing homelessness who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing and Safe Havens. Continuums of Care must also conduct a count of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on an annual basis.  Grant funding is often dependent on the number of people experiencing homelessness. Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally. The Mountain Homeless Coalition coordinates the mountain count annually.

Participants will be able to sign up on Jan. 12 as a volunteer for the Point-in-Time Count (PITC) of the homeless to be held on Thursday Jan. 22. They may also sign up on the county link: https://sbchp.sbcounty.gov/community-projects/point-in-time-count/.

There will be trainings for the PITC volunteers online at various days and times. One training is required. A live in-person training will be held on Monday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Richard’s Church, 28708 Highway 18, Skyforest. The registrant’s training will be one to two hours.

The Point-in-Time Count of the homeless will start at St. Richard’s Church at 9 a.m. on the Jan. 22.  The volunteers will be out in the field from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each volunteer will be in a team with a smart phone to record the survey of the homeless. For further information, call Sue Walker at (909) 337-1279.
