On Tuesday, March 10, a woman’s body was discovered on the right shoulder of Highway 18 at the Mormon Monument Road turnoff near Crestline at 6:57 a.m. Many passersby on Highway 18 saw her body lying face down on the side of the turnout, as they drove down the highway, and called it into 911 as an apparent hit and run since there were no additional vehicles at the site.

A California Highway Patrol unit arrived around 6:57 a.m. Fire units from the San Bernardino County Fire Station 25 in Top Town Crestline arrived to provide life-saving measures. She was declared dead at the scene. The temperature at the time was 30 degrees, and it was overcast skies with high humidity in the air.

As the sheriff ‘s deputies arrived, the incident was deemed suspicious in many regards, as there were no vehicles nearby, and yet it was not an obvious hit and run, either. So, the Homicide division of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was called in quickly to investigate the situation. It spent many hours collecting evidence at the site. Shortly afterwards, the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office was called. Many more drivers who passed by, since the highway was never closed, saw the investigators and the covered body at the scene.

The victim was identified by Deputy Coroner S. Hill of the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office on Thursday, March 12, as 44-year-old Patricia Manzo who lived in Twin Peaks and has a daughter.

A suspect has been identified in this suspicious death, but authorities have yet to release a name or an age. A media spokesperson for the Coroner’s Division said on Friday, March 13 that the investigation is ongoing.
