The Heisler Theater Company’s spring show, The Maltese Falcon, is adapted directly from the 1930 novel by Dashiell Hammett by the playwrights at Heisler Theater.
The story has many twists and turns, but the basic story is about Sam Spade, a San Francisco private investigator with an ultra-competent secretary, Effie. To start the mysterious situations, a sultry and mysterious Miss Wonderly arrives at the office hoping to hire Spade, ostensibly for protection. Then Spade’s partner Archer is shot and the plot steadily thickens to reveal that Miss Wonderly and other mysterious people are after an old Maltese falcon statue, supposedly studded with jewels beneath its black veneer.
The Heisler Theater always has a twist in the plot from what is expected, so do not expect a direct reenactment of the old Humphrey Bogart movie, which did make Bogey a star of film noir of the 30s.
The actors for this play are drawn from the Heisler Theater’s own mysterious cast of characters. Sam Spade is portrayed by Ryan Moore; secretary Effie, Gaye Gamble-Heisler; Miss Wonderly, Becky Ikenberry; Iva, Shari Spencer; Dundee, Alan McNeil; Polhaus, Michael Patrick Brewer; Guttman, Tomas Viramontes; Cairo, Aidan Lynch; Willmer, Justin Walker; and Archer, Jeff Heisler. The backstage crew includes Alex May doing lights, which are very important in this show, and Sam Starr is fulling the various tech needs.
The Maltese Falcon will be staged at the Tudor House over three weekends. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. shows on Saturdays May 23 and June 6. Doors will open at 2:00 p.m. for the 3:00 p.m. matinee on Saturday, May 30.
