The Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club at Leisure Shores in Crestline has many classes and numerous programs to engage its members. One of the clubs is the Science Club, which researches many aspects of life through the perception of science. The members meet at 10:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of each month at Leisure Shores.

Their most recent guest speaker, Todd Warden, was from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD). He brought many devices and demonstrated ways to improve air quality, both immediately and for the future. He explained how the AQMD measures the particulates in the air and why the density of the particulates matters for health.

The recent fires in Canada and the wind-blown ash and particulates are affecting life in the eastern states. Seniors can be more seriously affected by poor air quality, since many are more sensitive and have weakened immune systems. Locally we often see the effects of fire in the sunset sky as fire ash makes the sky orange.

The senior nutritional luncheons at the San Moritz Lodge are attended by approximately 100 seniors twice weekly. They are often entertained by the Mountain Music Makers, another club at Leisure Shores.

We all have experienced poor air quality from fires and smog here in Southern California. The AQMD is trying to prevent this poor air quality being created from stationary power plants and internal combustion engines.

Warden brought examples of several new power sources that may in the future positively improve air quality. The AQMD is working toward a zero-emission world in the future by using hydrogen to fuel vehicles and by switching to electric vehicles instead of the current internal combustion engines. There has been much growth in efficiency of these vehicles in the past few years. New inventions and concepts of power are being investigated for cleaner air.

There was an easy-up with a table with several diagrams, displays and posters showing how power is created for different uses and needs, and examples of how much pollution is created by each power source.

Last month the Science Club took a field trip to the Crestline Sanitation District, where they learned about the disposal of local sewage and its transformation into fertilizer.

Since the members come from diverse backgrounds and employments, often they share their own knowledge from employment in the fields of science, aerospace, electronics and more. They are always seeking guest speakers.

Another fascinating club that engages their members is the Philosophy Club which meets twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays at 10 a.m. Those discussions between the members are very stimulating on a wide variety of topics and extremely insightful as the diverse backgrounds of the members bring new perspectives on every issue.

Last week wolf pups visited the members at Leisure Shores. They got to pet and hold the wolf cubs. This activity was coordinated by Activities Director Lori Wickes; many members came out to see the wolves.

Membership in the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club is $20 a year for those age 50 and above. There is no residency requirement so club members are from all the mountain communities and some come up for the fun from down the hill. For more information on their wide variety of weekday programs, contact the office at (909) 338-5036 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. See their Crest Forest Seniors page on Facebook or visit www.crestlineseniorcitizens.org.

The club also hosts the twice weekly senior nutritional luncheons on Tuesdays and Thursdays, usually held at the San Moritz Lodge. This month, because of other activities at the San Moritz Lodge, these luncheons are being held at Leisure Shores with two seatings – one at 10:45 a.m. and the second at 11:45 a.m. – through Tuesday, July 28. Then they will return to their normal location and the regular noontime meals, preceded by chair yoga on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.

There is always something happening with the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club. Upcoming next month is a county-western-themed dance party at the south shore pavilion of Lake Gregory for adults of all ages; the public is invited. Watch for details forthcoming.
