Jiu jitsu competition returns to the mountain Saturday, Aug. 29, as Lake Arrowhead Jiu Jitsu hosts the second annual Lake Arrowhead Jiu Jitsu Open at the Sandals Church gymnasium.

Last year’s inaugural tournament, hosted by the King of Subs promotion, brought competitors from around Southern California to Lake Arrowhead and provided an exciting day of competition for both athletes and spectators. This year, Lake Arrowhead Jiu Jitsu is taking over as host and inviting the mountain communities to come out and cheer on the local athletes competing in their own backyard.

The tournament will feature children, teens, adults and masters competing in both gi and no-gi divisions. Matches will have an unusual twist: Immediately before each match, a coin flip will determine whether the competitors will face one another under a points ruleset or submission-only rules.

For those who have never attended a jiu jitsu tournament, the Lake Arrowhead Open offers a chance to see the sport up close. Matches are fast-paced, easy to follow once the action gets underway and last year’s event provided plenty of exciting moments throughout the day.

A strong group of mountain athletes is expected to compete and local residents are encouraged to come out, make some noise and give their friends, neighbors and young competitors a genuine hometown advantage.

Doors open at 8 a.m., with a rules meeting at 9 a.m. and competition expected to begin at approximately 10 a.m. The official match schedule will be released on Smoothcomp in the days before the tournament.

Spectator admission is $15 at the door. Children under 5 are admitted free.

The tournament will be held at Sandals Church gymnasium, 1103 CA-173 in Lake Arrowhead.
