The Crestline Lions Club hosted the annual Lions district meeting at Leisure Shores in Crestline. There are 40 clubs in the district and 52 Lions attended the day-long meeting representing the various clubs.
Jennifer Simpson, the Lions’ district governor, chose the theme of the 1950s and the Lions came dressed in their best ‘50s garb, including bowling shirts, prom dresses, poodle skirts, bobbie socks, oxford saddle shoes and TV cowboy outfits. They had a costume contest and the winner received a cash prize. They had a Hula Hoop contest and it was fun watching for the most swivelly hips and the ability to keep that hoop in motion.
Another competition was held between the clubs: Each club brought books as a donation for their upcoming literacy project and book donation events. The winning club was the Crestline Lions Club as they donated 232 books; they received a certificate from the district governor for their efforts. On Sunday, Sept. 20 the Lions were at the Victor Valley Mall in Victorville for a book giveaway.
Serious district business was also discussed, including the budgets, service projects, the future of the district and expectations of each club. The district cabinet officers held a private session in the Fireside Room before the general conference, discussing the accomplishments of the district so far and setting some goals.
The 50s were the theme throughout the meeting. Even the food was based around what everyone ate during the 50s and everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy the idea. This is the first time the district meeting has been held in Crestline, despite the fact that Crestline has had a Lions Club since 1939.
The current fundraiser the Crestline Lions are undertaking is their annual firewood drawing. They can be seen most weekdays in front of the Crestline post office with the tickets for sale. Catherine Johnson said this event has been very popular each year and that it greatly benefits the person who wins. The firewood is ready to be burned and is delivered to the winner’s home.
