Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott
I Dig Rock and Roll Music
It’s been an amazing year for all the concerts me and the Missus have seen in Laughlin and Las Vegas. So far, we’ve seen Foreigner at the Venetian in Vegas, America (“Horse with No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” etc.), as well as Kane Brown, Chris Stapleton, Marshal Tucker Band, REO Speedwagon and Sammy Hagar, all in Laughlin.
The general manager at Aquarius Hotel Casino, who grew up in Crestline and attended Rim of the World High School, had arranged for Uncle Mott to interview Sammy (a former Lake Arrowhead resident) but that never happened since, halfway through Sammy’s set, a major windstorm (the same one we had back in August) blew away pieces of the stage and the overhead lights started swinging back and forth.
The next thing we knew, the concert was called off and about 7,000 of us were evacuated from the stadium. Also called off was my exclusive interview with Sammy. However, the Aquarius general manager was able to gift me with an autographed bottle of Sammy’s latest Cabo Wabo Tequila, which I’m saving for a special occasion.
Last weekend, we saw Three Dog Night (“Joy to the World,” “Old Fashioned Love Song,” etc.) The best thing about all these concerts is that our casino host gifted us with VIP tickets, meaning we got seats near the front of the stage. Man, I sure dig these guys. In fact, I dig rock ‘n roll!
I dig rock and roll music and I love to get the chance to play (and sing it). I figure it’s about the happiest sound goin’ down today. The message may not move me, or mean a great deal to me, but, Hey! It feels so groovy to say: I dig The Mamas and the Papas at ‘The Trip’, Sunset Strip in LA, and they got a good thing goin’ when the words don’t get in the way. And when they’re really wailing, Michelle and Cass are sailin’ Hey! They really nail me to the wall. (“I Dig Rock & Roll Music” – Peter, Paul & Mary – 1967)
I reckon the best concert of all was Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where we got to sit in the corporate suite of the company that owns Aquarius and Edgewater casinos in Laughlin, as well as Arizona Charlie’s and the Strat (formerly Stratosphere) in Las Vegas.
I dig Donovan in a dream-like, tripped out way. His crystal images tell you ‘bout a brighter day, and when the Beatles tell you, they’ve got a word, “Love,” to sell you, they mean exactly what they say. I dig rock and roll music; I could easily get it on in that scene. I think I could say somethin’ if you know what I mean. But if I really say it, the radio won’t play it, unless I lay it between the lines!
More rock ‘n roll next week, so stay tuned. And, by all means…
Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
