WHAT’S COOKIN’

RB’s Steakhouse a favorite with locals

By DOUGLAS W MOTLEY
Senior Writer

Tucked away in the back corner of Oak Terrace, just off of Hook Creek Road in Cedar Glen, resides RB’s Steakhouse, well-known and revered by locals, as well as mountain visitors fortunate enough to discover this hidden gem.
Formerly known as The Chef’s Inn, dating back to the 1800s, RB’s has a colorful history, such as period-piece antiques throughout the three-story building and the downstairs bar, originally the 80-foot-long bar at Ormsby House Hotel, Carson City’s first gambling establishment. The bar was a favorite of the loggers working in the area, who often visited it first, followed by dinner in the upstairs parlor.
Staff writers from The Alpine Mountaineer enjoyed a sumptuous dinner in the historic, second floor, parlor dining room on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Perusing the extensive lunch and dinner menu, we found nine appetizers, four salads, eight burgers and sandwiches, nine steaks, 10 specialty meals, five seafood items, two chicken meals and four kids’ meals. The breakfast menu features a selection of egg meals and omelets with a choice of hash browns, fruit, toast and pancakes.
Staff writer Rhea-Frances Tetley chose grilled jumbo shrimp, sautéed in a butter sauce, which was accompanied with rice and a side of clam chowder. As for myself and our son, David Motley, who delivers this newspaper to stores and news racks throughout the mountaintop area, we both ordered the prime rib dinner, complete with dinner salad, baked potato and fresh vegetables, accompanied by warm, buttered rolls. Our server was friendly and quite accommodating when I asked for cheese and bacon bits for my baked potato, which was already drenched with melted butter. Our meals were served promptly and were reasonably priced.
Seated across from us, next to an ornate fireplace, was a couple from Blue Jay. “We come here every week. I love the prime rib and deep-fried shrimp,” said Dylan Bay. When asked to describe her experience at RB’s, Dylan’s wife said, “It’s warm, welcoming and delicious. Sometimes we come here for appetizers and karaoke in the bar.”
RB’s Steakhouse, located at 29020 Oak Terrace in Cedar Glen, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Take-out meals are available by calling (909) 336-4363. https://www.restaurantji.com/ca/lake-arrowhead/rbs-steakhouse-/
