Eleven high school students who won the piano portion of the Rotary music competition at the local club level participated in the Rotary District 5330 competition on April 1 at the University of Redlands.

The mountain’s own TJ Roger, a senior at the Lake Arrowhead Christian School, placed second in the district competition. He was sponsored by the three mountain clubs: Crestline-Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead and Mountain Sunrise.

TJ played the same two pieces that captured first place for him at the Feb. 15 competition, held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church: “Piano Sonata in B flat major” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “Danza de la Moza Donosa” by Alberto E. Ginastera.

First place at the district level was won by Lucas Schaefer and third place was awarded to Adam Timney. Both boys were sponsored by the Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club.

Lucas, a junior, played “Concert Etude No. 3” by Franz Liszt and “Etude Op. 25 No. 10” by Frederic Chopin. Adam, a freshman, played “Impromptu No. 2 Op. 90” by Franz Schubert and “Dark Canon in D” by Lionel Yu.

All three students have been asked to perform at the District 5330 conference in Indio on June 17. Lucas will receive his $1,000 prize at the conference. TJ and Adam were presented with $500 and $250, respectively, on April 1.
