Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott – Lightning Strikes

Oct 11, 2023 | Uncle Mott

Person at Mottsville sign in sunny outdoor setting.

Hi, it’s Uncle Mott again from high atop the bell tower at the stately Motley Manor. Hey, how about that thunderstorm we had a few weeks ago? It was a real whopper, especially when a lightning bolt struck the bell in my belltower.

It’s a good thing there were no bats in my belfry, though I’ve been told that I do have a few…Hey, I resemble that remark! Anyway, you should see the huge crack in the bell. Why, Ben Franklin would be rolling in his grave, if not in his girlfriend’s arms.

Nature’s takin’ over my one-track mind (ma-me-aah, ooh) All the girls are sayin’ that you’ll end up a fool (ma-me-aah) For the time being, baby, live by my rules (ma-me-aah, ooh). If she’s put together fine and she’s readin’ my mind (stop). I can’t stop (stop), I can’t stop myself (Stop, stop) Lightning is striking again. Lightning is striking again and again and again. (“Lightning Strikes” – Lou Christie – 1982)

It was raining cats and dogs again, so much so that the Lake Gregory Yacht Club felt it was necessary to cancel their Sept. 30 remote control sailboat class for the Boys & Girls Club. However, despite the storm, the Water Lantern Festival proceeded as planned, though there were a lot of soggy lanterns, not to mention my soggy nachos.

This just in from the Mountaineer Weather Center: A flock of bats has just been sighted, heading for Uncle Mott’s belfry. Oh, no, not again! Hopefully, there won’t be any more lightning strikes on my belltower, or my belfry, for that matter. In the meantime, I just cannot stop.

If she gives me a sign that she wants to make time, stop, I can’t stop (stop), I can’t stop myself (stop, stop) Lightning is striking again. Lightning is striking again and again and again and again.

Now it’s time for the latest report from our staff traffic reporter, Fred Friendly, the Frivolous Freeway Flyer. What’s up, Fred? Well, Uncle Mott, it seems there has been a freak accident on Lake Drive. Okay, so what happened, Fred? Two freaks on skateboards just ran into each other.

Now that the sun has popped out of its shell and the daytime temperature is warmer, lots of folks will be headed back to Lake Gregory’s North Shore beach for fun in the sun and more fun on the lake’s play station.

This just in from our Mountaineer Weather Reporter Floyd Frigid: Today’s forecast for Lake Gregory calls for low crowds with mostly sandy weather. Anyway, here comes the sun.

Here comes the sun, doo-doo-foo-doo. Here comes the sun, and I say it’s alright. Little darlin’, it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter. Little darlin’, it feels like years since it’s been here. Here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo-doo. Here comes the sun, and I say it’s alright. (“Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles – From the 1969 Abby Road album)

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Here Comes Summer

I’d like to begin this week with a seasonal sort of rhyme that goes sort of like this: Spring has sprung, and fall has fell. Now it’s summer and it’s hotter than…heck, yes, that’s it, hotter than heck, what the heck did you think I was gonna say? Well, there’s no...
