It was 248 years ago on Nov. 10, 1775, at Tun Tavern that the Continental Marines were officially formed. As the first order of business Samuel Nicholas became commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became its first captain and recruiter. Both recruited skilled marksman to become the first Marines from a Conestoga wagon outside the tavern.
Approximately 40 local Marines with family and friends gathered at San Marzano Community Center to pay homage to their founding. A message from the national commandant was played, followed by the traditional cake cutting with the oldest and youngest Marine.
This year’s cake cutters were our own Daryl Carroll, former drill instructor, who shared the honors with former Marine Captain James “Bim” Beckman. The youngest Marine was Emanuel Villareal.
An evening with storytelling, singing and camaraderie was on the bill. Celebrating the Marine Corps birthday has become a popular annual event for mountain Marines.
