Group at church hot meals program

Three members of the Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church youth group, their parents and three staff members went to help prepare and serve dinner to people experiencing homelessness or financial hardship at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside on Sunday, Nov. 12.

The group gathered at 2:00 p.m. to help prepare the meal, which consisted of Thai chicken, coconut rice, fruit salad, green salad, rolls, cookies and drinks. The youth worked in the kitchen and then helped decorate the room for the guests.

The volunteers gathered for prayer before the guests arrived at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Bill Stanley led a prayer for the guests and volunteers at the start of the meal.

The youth prepared the plates with food from behind the counter and the adult volunteers served the food to the guests at their seats. When the guests had finished eating, they had the opportunity to look through donations of clothes and shoes which some of the church group had help set up while the youth were preparing the meal. There were also supplies like dog food, cat food and plastic raincoats for the guests to take with them.

All the volunteers from Lake Arrowhead enjoyed serving. Some even sampled the food, which was delicious!

The Calvary Presbyterian Church has been leading the hot meals program since 1983. The program began in a park and then moved into the church building in 1985. They typically serve 80 to 120 guests each week. Mobile showers are available to the guests on third and fifth Sundays.
