Dear Sidney – 01/11/2024

Jan 10, 2024 | Dear Sidney

Dearest Sidney,

Happy New Year! May the year bless you and keep you warm. No more eight-foot snow berms.

I have a dear friend now living out of state since 2019. Every Christmas since moving away, she sends me a gift box by way of the USPS. The box is always received at least 10 or more days after Christmas day and is filled with shoddily wrapped novelties, candles, fruitcake, chocolates and yet another holiday sweater. Right on time, I picked up the hastily taped-up cardboard box at the post office today.

My gift to her is a VISA gift card for $100 sent right after Thanksgiving. Am I being touchy and a bit offish to think that maybe – just maybe – her presents are re-gifts, gifts that she received and had no use for? Inside the box was a wrapped present that had been previously ripped open and then taped up again? I mean, really!

Obviously, I must call her and thank her for her generosity, right? But it truly pisses me off. Should I speak up?

Offended in Crestline

Dear Offended,

Ah, ‘tis the season for giving, peace on earth, complaining and a lump of coal in our stockings.

Shush! Don’t say a word. Simply donate any of the unwanted gifts to the Ye Old Thrift Shoppe in Top Town, which benefits the Crest Forest Senior Citizens Club. Remember next year to mail your dear friend a $25 VISA gift card and spend the other $75 on you. You deserve it, Scrooge!

Dear Sidney, I’ve been up and down this mountain since Grandpa bought a vacation cabin in Crestline circa 1954. From 39th and Arrowhead in San Bernardino, we’d all pile into the red and white boat of a Buick and head up the mountain from 40th Street. Not long of a...
