Favorable weather during the last months of 2023 and full crews for getting the work done mean the Goodwin’s Market rebuild is on track to finish before the start of summer.

“We were really blessed to have good weather for November and December,” Mike Johnstone, Goodwin’s Market VP and general manager told the Alpine Mountaineer. “The contractors were able to get a lot done for us.”

Johnstone added that Goodwin’s Market is still on track for maybe a late April/early May soft opening.

“The entire new front extension is now maybe 95 percent completed,” he added. “The framing is completed, and next week we will do the roofing over the new front end.”

After the roofing is completed over the new entrance, double-paned glass windows will be installed to the new front end.

Work has begun on building some of the interior walls for the rebuilt Goodwin’s Market.

Johnstone said work on the new interior walls of the market started Jan. 8.

One unexpected change is how much plumbing had to be replaced.

“We were thinking to just use the existing plumbing lines but our plumbers said all of the existing plumbing was old cast iron pipes, so they recommended we might as well do all new plumbing.”

All of that is happening as fast as possible.

“Next week the contractors will come in a pour new concrete slab, so we will have new sewer and plumbing lines and new electrical for the store,” he said.

Johnstone added that the new roof is 100 percent sealed up. “All of the roof drains are working perfectly. There are some final touches needed, but just minor stuff.

“The hot food area will be really unique, and the new seating area for the front end will offer a beautiful place to sit and have lunch or have coffee, a doughnut or sweet rolls with your friends,” he said.

The expanded deli section will include a pizza oven much like the Goodwin’s store in Loma Lina offers.

Johnstone said work on rebuilding Goodwin’s Market is showing great progress.

“The main thing I want to stress is, we are getting the work done in record time,” he stressed. “We (the family) are excited to get the store open as quickly as possible.”
