On the Saturday of Martin Luther King’s three-day weekend, the Lake Gregory Company held its winter Trivia Night at the San Moritz Lodge in Crestline from 6 to 8 p.m.
This year, it was held in the large lodge room as last year the number who attended fully filled the small assembly room. Eighty people signed up in advance to attend this fun and free evening of trivia, which was designed for all ages. Several more arrived at the door to play. No cellphones were allowed to research the answers. Each team of up to six people racked their brains to remember or figure out the answers; then they were amazed at themselves when the answers were revealed because all were obvious and well-known facts. Only one answer was disagreed with but, since some did know the answer, it was deemed to have been correct.
Alma Barrios and Michelle Miller from the Lake Gregory Company designed the generational trivia questions, which were aimed at all generations, from Baby Boomers to Millennials, to Gen-X and Gen-Z. Each category had questions aimed at different levels of cultural and pop knowledge, which appealed to the trivia fans in the room.
The evening was filled with fun, with eight categories and three bonus questions. Each round had numerous questions appealing to the different ages of the attendees in the areas of TV & Movies, Pop Culture, Music & Artists, News Headlines and Slang & Slogans. Each group choose a team name when they registered and worked together to choose their written answers. Scores were determined by points and each round had a winner that was posted in the front of the room on a white board.
The answers to the questions during the evening were written on answer sheets after agreement by the team, turned in at the end of the round and graded by the judges at the end of each round of eight questions. Each correct answer was worth two points. There were also three quick rounds, worth five points each, where a representative from each of the 15 teams came up to the front of the room and guessed the reason for the commonality of the four stated items, such as the listing of four movies that had been remade.
Entry to Trivia Night was free with an online RSVP made in advance, so the Lake Gregory Company would know how many wanted to attend and how many tables to set up. The lure to attend was the prizes promised for the winning teams and bragging rights of possibly winning. What was interesting is that the same team that won last year, “Horst and Horn,” also won this year.
Before the contest began, attendees had an opportunity to buy food from Buddy’s BBQ and liquid adult and soft drink refreshment from The Bear Claw, and a chance to interact with others. It was quite the social gathering of the community, from new residents, some weekenders and many die-hard trivia fans of all ages.
The winning team “Horst and Horn” included members Patrick, Adam, Say, Vergine, Tristan and Marie of all age groups so they had an advantage for the various generation-specific questions. The team represents the streets of Weisshorn and Horst in the San Moritz area of Crestline with some full-timers and some part-time residents from the North-East Los Angeles area who came up especially this holiday weekend for the contest. They won a Duffy oat ride on Lake Gregory for winning the trivia contest.
“It was an honor to have won again,” Marie said, “and what a fun way to spend an evening with family and friends. It is such a welcoming and acceptable atmosphere here.” They were also thrilled to win another one-hour Duffy boat ride in the raffle drawing.

Raffle tickets were sold (a bargain 28 tickets for $20) and eight winners were drawn and announced. What was funny to the audience was that the team of “The Golden Girls” won four raffle gifts, in a row, winning two separate one-night stays at the Lakeside Chalet, a one-hour Duffy boat ride and “a love at the lake” gift basket with cider, glasses and popcorn. The four ladies of the Golden Girls team were shocked but excited to win, with Vickie Vargas happily promising to be involved in the “Kite Saturday” next April. She was very actively involved in last year’s Kite Day as well. Golden Girls team member Candace Pearson commented, “I wonder what were the odds of each of us winning in the raffle drawing – so strange!”

There were eight drawings for the raffle gifts. The other raffle winners were the “Drunk Geniuses” who won a Duffy boat ride, and “We Drink and Know Things,” who won both bundles of Lake Gregory swag.
At the end, Barrios and Miller, who are the event and wedding coordinators for the Lake Gregory Company, asked for suggestions for the next Trivia Night, since the community apparently likes them. Although competition was serious, the atmosphere was friendly, with happiness and socializing between the groups all evening long. The teams ranged in size from four to six members each. Each team was seated around their own table.
The next big community events at the San Moritz Lodge will be the Crestline Chamber of Commerce’s Mardi Gras-themed Corks & Hops on Feb. 10 and the annual Duck Derby, planned for the lake on Saturday, March 30.
“This evening went so well,” Barrios said, “I anticipate we’ll definitely repeat Trivia Night next year.”
