James Stanford had been a member of Boy Scout Troop 251, sponsored by the Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church. When that troop disbanded, he and his fellow Scouts became members of Troop 55.

When it came time for James – now a senior at Rim Virtual Academy – to decide on an Eagle Scout project, it was natural for him to look at the church for inspiration.

“I am so thankful to this church and everyone here,” he said during the service on Jan. 21. “The church has been a big support to me and my former troop, 251.”

His project, which he started a year ago, was to clean out and repair the drainage culvert in the back corner of the church parking lot.

The culvert, James said, was covered with dirt and debris. “It was destroyed – it did not look good. It was almost an eyesore,” he said.

Once he started the project, James added, “the amount of dirt we pulled off was incredible.”

Over time, he had to change up his plan a bit. There was, he noted, no concrete bottom below the dirt. He leveled out the bottom and made sure water flowed smoothly into the drainage pipe.

“Now it looks nice,” James said. “Water flows nicely and it looks better.”

During the service, the Rev. Dr. Bill Stanley congratulated James, noting he had received his Eagle Scout award the previous day at the church in his Court of Honor.
