Cathy Lee “Cate” Arciniega of Crestline, peacefully joined her Heavenly Father by natural causes on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the age of 75.
Cate was an exceptionally kind and loving friend, mother and grandmother. Her passions included her faith, family, Lakers basketball and a variety of crafting techniques including watercolor painting, paper crafting and a newfound skill of painting by airbrush. Cate was also an avid reader, preferring suspenseful crime novels, and enjoyed a diverse repertoire of social dancing during her younger years.
Cate was born Cathy Stringfellow to James and Barbara (Burgeson) on May 4, 1948, in Riverside. She graduated with the first senior class of the newly minted Poly High School in 1966. She promptly achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal Poly Pomona and then a master’s degree in Education much later in life. Cate met Dave Malucky of Riverside while both were attending Cal Poly and they married at the tender age of 21. Her firstborn son, Scott, joined their family one year later.
Cate eventually married Art Arciniega in 1976; he soon legally adopted Scott and they moved to Running Springs. Cate and Art wanted to raise a family in the mountains where they ultimately had three more boys – Samuel, James and Joshua. After 10 years of marriage, they divorced and Cate started a new career in Riverside as an elementary school teacher. She largely taught kindergarten at La Granada Elementary School but also had experience teaching other elementary courses over her 25-year career.
All said, Cate spent nearly half of her life in the San Bernardino Mountains having also lived in Mt. Home, Idaho; Riverside, Costa Mesa and San Bernardino, CA.
Cate is survived by her children – Scott (Kelly), Sam, Jim (Lora) and Josh (Susan), and seven grandchildren whom she cherished. She is preceded in death by her parents (Jim and Barbara) and brother, James B. “Spike” Stringfellow III.
Memorial services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Crestline at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024, with a reception to follow. All are welcome.
