Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott – Act Naturally

I’m watching the Academy Awards show as I write this week’s weak musing. I say weak only because I rarely go to the movies since the closing of Blue Jay Cinema. By the way, I don’t plan on shopping at that so-called discount supermarket that plans to open in its place. I may even begin shopping at Jensen’s, at least until Goodwin’s reopens.

Anyhoo, back to the movies. The only one I watched this year was Bob, a historical piece about Jamaican Reggie performer Bob Marley…it was very depressing and I only went to see it to kill time while I was waiting to pick up copies of this here newspaper from the print shop which is not far from the AMC Theater at Ontario Mills, where I saw Bob. It’s one of my favorite movie theaters because they let you butter your own popcorn and buttered popcorn is the main reason I ever go to the movies.

Now, I’m no Sam Rubin or Siskel and Ebert, but I’ve actually been wanting to see Oppenheimer, but I haven’t been able to find anyplace that’s showing it. Everybody and their brother will probably be showing Oppenheimer after tonight’s Academy Awards presentation. I suspect it will be depressing, I mean, what’s so funny or entertaining about atom bombs?

Oh well, back to the Oscars. It’s 4 p.m. and show’s about to start, better go make some popcorn, layered with extra butter, of course… Hi Sam, what’re you doing in my kitchen, aren’t you supposed to be on the red carpet, interviewing all the big movie stars? Hey, how’s the wife and kids? That bad, eh? Bet you didn’t know I could speak Canadian, eh?

They’re gonna put me in the movies, they’re gonna make a big star out of me. We’ll make a film about a man that’s sad and lonely and all I gotta do is act naturally. Well, I’ll bet you I’m gonna be a big star, might win an Oscar, you can never tell. The movies gonna make me a big star ‘cause I can play the part so well. (“Act Naturally” – Beatles, featuring Ringo Starr – 1965)

Well, it’s over and done now, the Oscars that is, and I coulda told ya Oppenheimer was gonna win a bunch of awards, and what do you know, it did.; seven Oscars in all, including Best Movie, Best Actors for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. and Best Director for Christopher Nolan.

But you know what? I could have done just as good, for I was in the Drama class at Tustin High School and acted in Little Women, Tammy Tell Me True and The Caine Mutiny Court Marshal.

Well, I hope you’ll come and see me in the movies, then I know you will plainly see the biggest fool that ever hit the big time and all I gotta do is act naturally.

Keep it flyin’,

Uncle Mott

Mountain Musings with Uncle Mott: Here Comes Summer

I’d like to begin this week with a seasonal sort of rhyme that goes sort of like this: Spring has sprung, and fall has fell. Now it’s summer and it’s hotter than…heck, yes, that’s it, hotter than heck, what the heck did you think I was gonna say? Well, there’s no...
