Dear Sidney – 03/28/2024

Mar 27, 2024 | Dear Sidney

The sun is out! My old dog is sleeping very well in the sun. However, I’m not sleeping well at all. I may have bruised the dear friendship of a neighbor. The guilt is keeping me awake.

She went and married an unequally yoked dirt bag. When she filed for divorce six months later, I was the first to congratulate her and to celebrate! We shared a few martinis on my front deck and laughed heartily at her midlife crisis big mistake. Oh, the things I said about him.

Fast forward to last week. Yep, she’s dating the mismatch from hell. I can’t believe it. She subtly let me know in a text message that they were in counseling. I did not respond. I have nothing to say. As my mother used to tell me, “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all” – advice I should have listened to.

He hasn’t moved back in yet, but I’m sure he will. I’m going to be keeping my head down in shame for the rest of my life. I’m such a fool. I should have kept my mouth shut.

Any advice to heal this disruption in my peace and quiet?

Big Mouth in Big Bear

Dear Big Mouth,

I’m tickled that our little newspaper has found its way to the east end of the mountain. You all get a bit more snow than we do in Crestline, which is best for the ski slope business, but I sure hope for your sake it’ll be melting by Mother’s Day.

This is a sticky slope you’ve put yourself on, but there’s an easy way down to be sure. Hide out. Stay quiet as a mouse. Let things take their own natural course. Shush is the word of the day.

Put a big smile on your face and wave hello to your foolish friend every chance you get. And when creepy moves back in, cross the street with an alcoholic offering for the happy couple. After all, what do you really care anyway?

Dear Sidney, I’ve been up and down this mountain since Grandpa bought a vacation cabin in Crestline circa 1954. From 39th and Arrowhead in San Bernardino, we’d all pile into the red and white boat of a Buick and head up the mountain from 40th Street. Not long of a...
