Lots of folks around here are still complaining about all the racket emanating from the Beyond Wonderland Electronic Music Festival held at the National Orange Show Events Center in the heart of San Bernardino.
This nocturnal noise reverberated all the way to Crestline, Cedarpines Park and Rimforest on the evenings of March 22 and 23, not to mention the rehearsals for several days prior to the actual event that reportedly lured some 80,000 music fans. What is most disturbing is the incessant BOOM, BOOM, BOOM of the bass guitar.
When I say”music,” I’m using that term loosely, for this is not music, folks, it’s electronic noise that kept many folks, including yours truly, awake way past 2 a.m. It wouldn’t have been so bad had they played nice music, like The Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash or 10cc but, nooo, it was that gawd-awful electronic racket that the young folks have taken a liking to in recent years, a most disturbing noise, mostly bass…no treble.
Because you know I’m all about that bass, ‘bout that bass, ‘bout that bass, no treble… (“All About That Bass” – Meghan Trainor – 2014). And whoever wrote that so-called song doesn’t seem to have a good grasp of the conventions of the English language… since when do you begin a song with “Because?”
This isn’t the first time this has happened. I’ve been hearing most of the concerts at Glen Helen Amphitheater (formerly Blockbuster Pavilion, San Manuel Amphitheater and Glen Helen Pavilion before that) since day one, over 30 years ago. First time was the Us Festival back in ‘83. It was kinda cool hearing David Bowie’s voice wafting through the pines all the way to my backyard deck. I remember it well… Let’s dance, let’s dance, put on your red shoes and dance the blues. Let’s dance to the song we’re playing. Let’s sway, under the moonlight, this serious moonlight… (“Let’s Dance – David Bowie – 1983)
Coming up on Saturday, May11 we have The Art Laboe Show (Good grief, is he still alive?) at Glen Helen Amphitheater, featuring Rose Royce, Amanda Perez Paula Deanda and GQ, not a bad lineup, if you’re into blues, soul, R&B and disco. Also, Country superstar Luke Bryan will be playing there on Saturday, Aug. 10. Back in the day, Laboe, a former radio DJ, was well known for hosting oldies but goodies concerts at El Monte Legion Stadium.
Locally, the family-friendly Community Market at Lake Gregory’s North Shore Pavilion, from 4 to 8 p.m. each and every Friday, through September, blends shopping, dining and live music. Market Night kicked off on May 4 with Crestline’s own By-Products performing on stage. Then, on May 10 come by with Mom for Mother’s Day to enjoy the swings, soars and saunters of Hilary Watson. This will be followed on May 17 when the Hi-Boys help you dance and laugh the night away. On May 24 of Memorial Day weekend, Green Valley Lake’s Neil Bradley and the Black Doggs will perform. Closing out the month of May will be local songstress Shannon Bizzy on May 31.
Keep it flyin’,
Uncle Mott
