An estimated 125 to 150 volunteers arrived at the Twin Peaks Community Center bright and early on Saturday, April 27 about to embark on a mission that would result in desperately needed repairs to four homes in order to make them warm, dry and safe for their occupants, many of whom are living on fixed incomes and lack the resources and energy to do it themselves.
After enjoying coffee, fresh fruits, donuts and comraderie, provided by the sponsoring San Bernardino Mountains Association of Building Contractors, the men and women volunteers and house captains set out to begin what, in many cases, would be an eight-hour-long workday at each of the four homes, two of which were in Crestline, one in Cedarpines Park and one more in Running Springs.
At day’s end, a traditional spaghetti dinner was served to all those who participated, at the Twin Peaks Community Center.
Upon arrival at a Crestline home on Zurich Court, a crew of volunteers from William Kanayan Construction, under the supervision of Karen and Rudy Westervelt, were seen reconstructing a large deck which had fallen victim to last year’s heavy snow load, while others used a weed eater and rakes to remove a healthy growth of weeds and perform other yardwork.

At the next Crestline home, in the 300 block of Dart Canyon Road, a team of volunteers from Shafe Electric performed needed electrical repairs at the home of Anna Arrubla. “They were so helpful; there was a lot of water damage from last winter’s Snowmageddon and I needed help,” shared Arrubla.
Volunteers from Lake Arrowhead Resort did landscaping work, while workers from Sky Ridge Builders replaced worn out steps and damaged gutters.
Meanwhile, at a home in the 100 block of Mormon Road in Cedarpines Park, a crew of six volunteers from the Lake Arrowhead Resort did landscaping work, while a team of volunteers from Sky Ridge Builders replaced worn out, wooden steps and damaged gutters.
Scott Markovich Construction cleaned the yard and made repairs to a fence and shed at this rustic 1927-era cabin in Running Springs.
Finally, at a home on Encina Drive in Running Springs, the yard was cleaned up and repairs made to a shed and a fence by volunteers from Markovich Construction. When asked how her home had been chosen for repairs, the homeowner, who did not wish to be identified, said she had been chosen after talking to Sue Parks, executive director of the Association of Building Contractors of the San Bernardino Mountains, who urged her to put in an application.
