Rim of the World High School

The Rim of the World High School choir performed at a festival competition at Fullerton College last month.

We performed two pieces for two adjudicators. Our goal for these sorts of festivals is to gain practice in performance, experience constructive competition with other high schools and gain feedback from other expert musical directors.

Rim High’s choir received a Silver rating, which in terms of these competitions can be viewed as second place.

Forum Music Festivals, the company that puts on these competitions, emphasizes that the performers in the Silver category are among the top 20 percent in the country!

A big shoutout to Parker Lawrence for receiving the Outstanding Musician award! For every performance the judges choose a performer who really stands out from the rest as being truly outstanding (the MVP, if you will), and Parker was ours! He did a fantastic job on his solo during the Advanced Choir piece. If you want to hear it, come to our Spring Concert on May 17.

And there is more exciting news about the Rim High music program.

The Rim High wind ensemble won GOLD!

The Rim High wind ensemble won GOLD!

At a recent Forum Music Festival, the wind ensemble achieved a gold rating. This first-place ranking indicates our students are among the top 10 percent in the country.

Time and time again, we hear from the judges that our musicians exceed excellence, that each is a soloist and individually phenomenal. We are commended on our ingenuity to overcome the misbalanced instrumentation of our groups and our professionalism.

The judges this time were university professors: Dr. Sakamoto of Cal State Bakersfield and Dr. Burdett of Azuza Pacific University. These professors of music are so impressed with our students’ skills that they asked to meet me. One professor even wants to come up and work with our kids, as an exchange of talent between their university band and ours.

Brenden Watson received an Oustanding Musician award, as a phenomenal alto sax soloist. (Yes, it’s the same Brenden that is also a champion drum major.)

The Rim High music program would like to thank the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club for assisting us, by providing funds to pay for our transportation!

You have heard a lot about us, now come listen to us play! All of the music ensembles will be playing at our spring concert on May 17 at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rim High. There will be a special appearance by Brenden Watson, the composer of one of our pieces.
