Voting boxes were placed around town on June 1 for the annual Crestline Grand Poobah contest. This fun event’s purpose is to raise funds for the annual Jamboree Days fireworks fund. The amount raised will be split 50/50 with the Rim Rec and Park District to benefit the kids in the community.
The Poobah contest is not only a competition to become the Grand Poobah – who will be invited to numerous community events throughout the year, including ribbon cuttings and other community events – but also a competition between the voting locations in town to become “The Home of the 2024 Grand Poobah.” That location will be able to hang that official banner and have bragging rights all year long. The Bear Claw has enjoyed that recognition this last year, when its candidate, Gretchen Davis, won.
The rules for the Grand Poobah contest are simple, with the only two requirements: The candidate must have a heartbeat and live in Crestline. Votes for Grand Poobah are $1 a vote, so the candidate who gets the most votes (i.e. raises the most money) wins. Residents who want to become the Grand Poobah may openly campaign for votes and, yes, a candidate may vote for themself, as many times as they want to pay a dollar. There is no nomination process, meaning every dollar equals one vote toward becoming the winner. This is an election in which it is possible to buy the election. Last year’s Grand Poobah election raised over $4,200.
At this time, voting locations include the Rim of the World Sports Bar, San Marzano Wine and Ale Lounge, Encompass Antiques and Gifts, the Bear Claw and the Crestline Jerky Shop. They are still seeking other voting locations. Let Jennifer Jones of San Marzano know if you want your business location to be a voting location.
Voting closes on June 28 and the Grand Poobah will be hatted at the Crestline community picnic on Sunday, June 30, hopefully by last year’s Grand Poobah Gretchen Davis. The Grand Poobah will ride on the Rim of the World Recreation and Park District float during the Jamboree Days parade on Saturday, July 6.
